You dont want disgruntled candidates running around town, talking about how rude your company is for never informing anyone of your decision. You also dont want to burn bridges with candidates who might be potential talent for your company down the line. But what if a polite email isnt enough for the candidates you connected with in the video interview? What if they want feedback in order to improve their interview wertmiger zuwachs in the f uture or understand why you went in a different direction? This can be sticky territory for employers and hiring managers. You dont want to step on any toes, but you do want to give candidates workable advice they can actually use to grow. Here are some things to keep in mind when doling out feedback after a video interviewBe politeThe most important tip here is to be polite. Maybe you didnt consider the candidate because they were sweating through their sensible business attire and you could tell, even on the other side of the webcam. Maybe you found their personality grating and thought they would be a horrible fit for your company culture. There are plenty of reasons hiring managers reject candidates that might sound harsh if you just blurted it out without any finesse.Dont be rude, because these job seekers can easily become brand ambassadors while conversing with others about their experience at your company. You want them to look positively on their experience, even if they did nt manage to snag the job. Make sure to word your advice and feedback in a delicate manner so you dont step on any toes. Be polite but realize the job seeker is asking you in order to improve their performance. If you avoid the question, you might spare the candidates feelings, but they will probably walk away from the interaction feeling let down.Instead, focus on tangible ways they can improve their performance for the next job interview. For instance, maybe they were far too general when you asked about their experience or qualifications. You might want to advise job seekers to focus on more concrete examples of how theyve brought value in the past. To avoid hurting feelings or getting too personal, focus on tangible advice that will help them nab the n ext job.Avoid a cliche, give real adviceTelling job seekers they were great but just not the right person for the position might seem like the best way to handle an uncomfortable situation. But its also cliche and you can be sure job seekers will spot an overused cliche.Much like breaking up with someone by saying its not you, its me, job seekers will be able to spot an overdone hiring cliche. Take a second to think about what kind of feedback you can offer and then give real advice, not just a few motivational sayings. It might seem uncomfortable, but giving real feedback to job seekers can be a great way to improve their view of your company. Now in addition to being a great place to work, youre also providing advice to help job seekers improve their interview skills. This can pay off in some good karma for your company, and come good word-of-mouth too. What are some ways you provide feedback to candidates after a video interview? Share in the comments

The 4 best work lessons for adults from Take Your Kids to Work Day
The 4 best work lessons for adults from Take Yur Kids to Work DayThe 4 best work lessons for adults from Take Your Kids to Work DayHavingbunch of cute little kids running around the office on Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day this week probably did mora than boost your mood.Your child can also teach you something about how to approach your career. Incorporating some childlike freedom at work could be the push you need to level up.1. Stay inquisitiveYoung kids arent afraid to ask questions- and you shouldnt be either.Tom Pohlmann and Neethi Mary Thomas of big data analytics and decision sciences company Mu Sigma wrote about just how question-focusedkids can be in a 2015Harvard Business Review article. In a recent poll of more than 200 of our clients, we found that those with children estimated that 70-80% of their kids dialogues with others were comprised of questions. But those same clients said that only 15-25% of their own interactions consisted of questions, they wrote.Inste ad of backing down, remember to ask questions in the office- whether its asking for clarification or asking for what you want directly- even if it makes you uncomfortable doing so in front of your team.2. Use your imagination and take creative risksKids dream that they can be anyone (and anything) they please, and you encourage them to - so why shouldnt you?The next time you find yourself in a rut or frustrated with work, set aside some time to daydream. After all, science says that itcan be good for you. You might even realize what you really want to strive for in your career, and come up with a plan to go after it.Ditch the jaded outlook that takes over on long, cloudy days for a more optimistic perspective.3. Have a sense of humorLynn Taylor, workplace expert and author of Tame Your Terrible Office Tyrant, told Forbes that workers tend to save the humor for their coworkers (not their managers). But keeping an inclusive sense of humor every day, with everyone, can be a big boost to your career.Humor creates an upbeat atmosphere that encourages interaction, brainstorming of new ideas, and a feeling that there are few risks in thinking outside the box. All that leads to greater productivityIt also stands to reason that if youre in a more jovial atmosphere, youll have more passion for what you do. Your work ethic will increase, and your enthusiasm will likely be contagious. Its a win-win for you and your employer, Taylor told Forbes. But cracking the right type of joke (properly) might even help you during a salary negotiation.4. Remember the golden ruleIn this case, treat your coworkers how youd want to be treated- with respect. The Harvard Business Review teamed up with Tony Schwartz, president and CEO of The Energy Project, and Georgetown University professor Christine Porath on a study of more than 19,000 employees, which she wrote about in an HBR article. Those that get respect from their leaders reported 56% better health and well-being, 1.72 times more t rust and safety, 89% greater enjoyment and satisfaction with their jobs, 92% greater focus and prioritization, and 1.26 times more meaning and significance. Those that feel respected by their leaders were also 1.1 times more likely to stay with their organizations than those that didnt, Porath wrote. When parents step out of the drivers seat for the day, their kids can teach them a lot.

6 Tricks Companies Use to Sell to Women
6 Tricks Companies Use to Sell to Women6 Tricks Companies Use to Sell to WomenAccording to a report published by Nielsen, their estimated combined purchasing power ranges from $5 trillion to $15 trillion annually, and theyre expected to control two-thirds of consumer wealth within the next 10 years. Marketers are taking aim squarely at women, with an arsenal of tricks aimed at getting them to open their purses and spend big. Knowing what theyre up to gives you the necessary ammunition to protect yourself. They Guilt Trip You A lot of marketing works on guilt, says Martin Lindstrom, branding expert, neuromarketing consultant and author of Small Data. That particular emotion is mora effective in influencing womens wallets than it is for mens. Why? Research published in the Spanish Journal of Psychology shows women, quite simply, feel more guilt, largely because theyre socially conditioned to. Lindstrom says the guilt-trip works for two reasons. The first is emotional in that whatev er product or tafelgeschirr you buy will make you feel like a better mother, a better wife, or a better friend. The second is rational and focuses on the practicality of the product or service in that it will solve a specified problem like the lack of time in your schedule. They Infiltrate Your Feed How often do you check your Instagram? Nearly two-thirds of users are on the platform daily, and more than one-third of those make multiple pit-stops every day, according to the Pew Research Center. Keeping up with the Joneses has never been easier - and more addicting. It brings with it the pressureto spend. Social channels give you the ability to compare yourself to everyone across every dimension, explains Lindstrom. The result is that the drive to have that Instagram-worthy life has never been greater.? Advertisers know this, of course, and now pay celebrities and social influencers (i.e. people who have large social followings) to promote products and services through their soc ial channels. It can be tricky to tell fact from fiction (hashtags like ad and spon are supposed to alert you to paid-for posts but they arent always present). One thing thats clear is that more women are looking and liking. Among Internet users, Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram are the top three social media platforms, and women participate more than men. They Create Context When marketing to women, advertisers are more likely to add context to the products use. This encourages you to mull on what the product would look like incorporated into your own life - and once you take possession of it in that (albeit imaginary) way, it shortens the purchasing process. They Promise to Turn Back the Clock Is there a fountain of youth? For marketers, there certainly is. With people begging for more hours in a day and trying to defy the effects of aging, it isnt surprising that research shows the more you use the word time or reference to it in an advertisement, it converts straight to sales, says Lindstrom. They Shrink the Size of Package Have you noticed certain beverages and products getting smaller? For instance, soft drink companies noticed women werent buying the full cans of soda anymore, because of the health concerns associated with them. The solution? Design smaller cans for women so they wouldnt feel as guilty, says Lindstrom. Consumers now pay more for less, and its working. Earlier this year, Coke announced that sales of its smaller packages (i.e. 8-packs of 12-ounce bottles and 7.5-ounce cans) continue to rise, while the sales of its larger bottles and cans continue to fall. They Bring Out Your Inner Huntress Women subconsciously want to hunt for a good deal, explains Lindstrom. The hunt is about feeling rewarded. To enable this behavior, stores purposely mess up their tables and hide products. If you have two tables next to each other - one thats neat versus one thats messy - the messy table sells 17 percent more, he says. You get even more competitive when shopping with a girlfriend, spending up to 12% more. Thats why its best to hunt alone. Music also comes into play, here. According to Lindstrom, if the beat is slower than the heartbeat rate, women buy 29% more. Research shows youre more likely to walk slower and therefore spend more time in the store. One way to avoid overspending altogether is to find all of the products you want to buy, leave them and then come back a day later. The dopamine reaction you initially had when you first saw the products is lower the second time around. The result? Half of those products will remain in the store.

Simon Ingersoll - Construction and Building
Simon Ingersoll - Construction and Building Simon Ingersoll - Construction and Building Simon IngersollFor more than a century, millions of people around the world working in the back-breaking construction industry have been deeply indebted to a man whose invention of the rock exerzieren made their work faster, more efficient, and less stressful. What madethe rock exerzierenpossible welches the invention of the percussion drill in 1871 by Simon Ingersoll (1818 1894), considered a genius in mechanical engineering. The drill has played an important role in excavation, mining, tunneling, and highway construction ever since.Ingersoll was born in 1818 in Stanwich, CT, where he received an informal grade school education. Throughout his life, he received patents for several inventions, including a steam engine shaft in 1858. Over the following decade, he developed other small implements including a scale, a friction clutch, and a gate latch. Despite these inventions, Ingersoll, far from we althy, continued to work as a farmer to support his family. His percussion drill replaced hand drilling, making mining and tunneling much faster and cheaper. Before Ingersolls drills, underground drilling was done by striking a length of steel rod repeatedly with a sledgehammer. Ingersolls invention surpassed earlier drills because it rotated the drill after each strike, automatically advancing the steel. His konzeption also featured an innovative tripod, and was significantly lighter than other drills. His first konzeption was powered by steam but later operated on compressed air.Ingersoll rock drill. The Ingersoll drills provided the basis for the Ingersoll Rand Corporation, founded in 1871. Although Ingersoll Rand no longer manufactures drills, its products range from biometric security readers to refrigeration technologies.Ironically, the Ingersoll Rock Drill was his only successful invention and brought him no financial reward. However, the lasting fame it generated came at a cri tical juncture in mining history.Ingersoll was a dreamer, a creator, and an ingenious mechanic. His first important invention was a wedge and plug-cutting machine. Prior to his device, shipbuilders and caulkers had cut their wooden plugs and wedges by hand. Ingersolls machine did the job mechanically. Alas, wooden ships were soon displaced by iron steamships. He invented an early steam-powered car, a friction clutch, a gate latch, and a spring scale. All these patents were assigned to others. Finally, a contractor friend suggested Ingersoll design a rock drill. The man had a contract for excavating rock in New York City, and if he had a mechanical drill, he reasoned, he could do the job faster and make some money. Ingersoll responded. On March 7, 1871 Ingersoll received his basic rock drill patent. There had been earlier drills, designed for mining and tunneling and mounted on carriages. Ingersoll mounted his drill on a tripod equipped with leg weights to hold it steady. In all 27 paten ts were issued to him, 13 pertaining to rock drills or their accessories. One covered the rifle bar for rotating the drilling element another covered a coupling for hose used in rock drilling.Though Ingersoll was never rewarded with the life of a successful inventor, his drill was a significant development. The new tripod-mounted drill used less manpower, was faster, and had a longer lifeit led to the increased productivity of excavation applications where workers were previously only able to dig eight- to ten-foot holes per day. It was regarded as one of the most useful appliances in railroad building applications.Ingersolls Little Giant tappet drill and the Rand Slugger drill are recognized pioneering the rock drill market. Derivatives of his drill have been useful in excavation, mining, tunneling, and highway construction. Modern versions of Ingersolls design are commonly used on practically every construction and excavation site worldwide.Ingersolls invention, paving the way for Ingersoll Rock Drill Company, eventually led to the establishment of Ingersoll Rand Co. Today, IR is a successful machinery and industrial equipment company in the markets of climate control, industrial solutions, infrastructure, and security and safety.Ingersoll, who was forced to sell most of his patents and work halfheartedly at farming to feed his family, died nearly destitute in 1894 at age 76.Arshad Mahmud is an independent writer. His percussion drill replaced hand drilling, making mining and tunneling much faster and cheaper.
